I've started this blog to share my adventures of raising my 2 beautiful boys. To share with you my struggle to find my inner super hero/rescue name/wrestling persona while trying to stay true to my belief of a weapon free home (yes toy of course!) and positive parenting. BUT IT'S HARD.... anyone who has ever tried to raise a boy discouraging violence has battled the same demons as I do every day. In a world where the first thing you see as you enter a toy store is toy weapons, and where most lego sets now come with guns, how do you explain that it's not o.k in your house without your 4 year old resenting you? Master 4 is fond of saying (with a big sigh) "Mom, I wish you were a fan of webbins" I feel a quick stab of accomplishment that I have limited his exposure enough that he doesn't know that they are called weapons, but it's a small battle won! I am passionate about positive parenting and know that so many people mistake positive parenting for "letting kids do what they want" I am up for letting the world know that that is far from the truth. We set boundaries, give clear limits and expectations, and when needed provide our children with logical consequences. What we try to do is to tell our children WHAT WE WANT them to do instead of what we DON'T want them to do. A quick example would be:
Instead of saying:
"NO!! DON'T DO THAT"
we would say:
"Harrison, please climb down off the table, tables are for eating off"
This gives the child a clear instruction of what you want them to do and tells them your expectations in a clear manner. If a child repeatedly hears NO all the time, they will just tune it out.
ANYWAYS....this all sounds so serious, I do want to explore the lighter side of mothering boys as well, but I just feel that you need to know where I'm coming from first!
I'm off to play in the dirt pit under our balcony....our favourite place to be!
